A conference at our Bridge Street office, by telephone or by video. You leave with an assessment of your position, the realistic outcomes, and a written costs disclosure.

What does the first appointment cost, and what happens in it?
Call the office and we will tell you the fee for an initial conference before you book, so there is no surprise. In that conference we take instructions, review any documents you bring, and give you an assessment of your position, the realistic outcomes and the likely cost of each step.
How will I be charged?
Under the Legal Profession Uniform Law, where legal costs are likely to exceed $750 excluding GST we must give you a written costs disclosure and a costs agreement before the work begins. Yours will set out our rates, an estimate of total costs, and how disbursements such as court filing fees and barristers' fees are handled. Fixed fees are available for many defined pieces of work, including wills, straightforward pleas and divorce applications.
I have been charged and have a court date. What should I do first?
Do not discuss the allegation with anyone other than a lawyer, and do not participate in a further police interview before you have advice. Bring your Court Attendance Notice, any bail acknowledgment, and the police Facts Sheet if you have it. Call us as early as possible — the period before the first mention is when the most useful work can be done.
How long after separating can I apply for a divorce?
In Australia you must have been separated for at least 12 months before a divorce application can be filed. Divorce is a separate process from dividing property or arranging care of children, and separation can in some circumstances be established while still living under one roof.
Is there a time limit on a property settlement?
Yes. Married couples have 12 months from the date the divorce becomes final to apply to the court for a property settlement or spousal maintenance. De facto partners have two years from the date of separation. Outside those periods you need the court's permission to apply, which is not guaranteed.
Someone has died. Do we need probate?
Probate is generally required where the estate holds real property in the deceased's sole name, or where a bank or share registry will not release assets without it. An application to the Supreme Court of NSW is usually made within six months of the date of death; later applications must explain the delay.
Can a will be challenged?
In NSW, an eligible person may bring a family provision claim, and the application must generally be filed within 12 months of the date of death. Careful drafting and properly recorded reasons at the time the will is made are the best protection against a later claim.
Do you act for people outside Granville?
Yes. We act for clients throughout Sydney and appear in courts across the metropolitan area. Conferences can be held at our Bridge Street office, by telephone or by video where that is more convenient.
